Insect academy and science camp: bringing bugs to boys and girls and teachers of all ages

Alan I. Kaplan, Tilden Nature Area, East Bay Regional Park District, Tilden Nature Area, 600 Canon Drive, Berkeley, California

Summer camps and teacher institutes are a popular means of introducing young people and their instructors to a variety of sciences. I have presented entomology-themed summer programs for youth at park district facilities since the 1970s. In 1998, I added a 3-day educators' academy for kindergarten through fifth grade teachers. Publicity, university credit, curriculum, materials, activities and program evaluation will be discussed.

Keywords: teacher training, summer camp
