Field evaluations of the possible effects of transgenic (Bt) YieldGard field corn on select non-target phytophagous and beneficial arthropods

Timothy G. Daly and G. David Buntin. University of Georgia, Department of Entomology, Georgia Experiment Station, 1109 Experiment St, Griffin, GA

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible detrimental impacts of YieldGard corn on select non-target phytophagous and beneficial arthopods. These tests were conducted in the summers of 2001 and 2002 to compare the populations of these arthropods in Bt corn versus non-Bt corn. Preliminary results indicate little noticeable effects.

Species 1: Heteroptera Anthocoridae Orius insidiosus (Insidious flower bug)
Species 2: Coleoptera Coccinellidae Coleomegilla maculata (Twelve spotted lady beetle)
Species 3: Heteroptera Lygaeidae Geocoris punctipes (Bigeyed bug)
Keywords: non-target species, Cry 1A(b) toxins
