Spring pollination by native bees in Virginia

Mark E. Kraemer, Agricultural Research Station, Virginia State University, Agricultural Research Station, P.O. Box 9061, Petersburg, VA

The eastern subspecies of the Blue Orchard Bee, Osmia lignaria lignaria Say, was trapped along the Appomatox River near Petersburg, Virginia, during the early spring of 2001. Adults were released the following spring in a commercial strawberry field and near research plots of meadowfoam, a specialty oilseed crop. Nests were established and larvae completed development. Pollen from individual cells was examined by scanning electron microscopy to determine plant species and relative amounts.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Megachilidae Osmia lignaria lignaria (blue orchard bee)
Keywords: meadowfoam, strawberry
