The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae Annand (Homoptera: Adelgidae), is a serious threat to hemlock landscape and forest stands in the eastern United States. The hemlock woolly adelgid is exotic to eastern North America and was likely introduced from Asia on ornamental trees. We explored two selected areas, one each in Baoxing County and in Kangding County, in southwest Sichuan Province, China for the adelgid and its natural enemies on Tsuga chinensis (Franchet) Pritzel in April 2002. We found HWA at both sites and collected four families of natural enemies in association with HWA. Scymnus camptodromus (Coccinellidae) was the most abundant at the Baoxing County site, while a Laricobius sp. (Derodontidae) was most abundant at the Kangding County site. Both species have been imported into the United States for quarantine evaluation as potential biological control agents of HWA.
