An improved insect-rearing rack for biting midges and mosquitoes

Gregg J. Hunt and Mark R. Muth. Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research Laboratory, USDA-ARS, POB 3965, University Station, Laramie, WY

An insect-rearing rack was improved for the large-scale rearing of Culicoides biting midges. This newly updated insectary equipment incorporates state-of-the-art electronic technology for the management of environmental conditions (e.g., photoperiod, temperature, humidity, movement of water, and air exchanges). The engineering design integrates stainless steel and laminated plastic construction that allows easy access, cleaning or decontamination, mobility, containment, and data trending capability for insectary personnel. This equipment may be adapted for the laboratory colonization and/or maintenance of mosquitoes.

Species 1: Diptera Ceratopogonidae (biting midge)
Species 2: Diptera Culicidae (mosquitoes)
Keywords: insect-rearing rack, insectary equipment
