Baited "trap" trees: a new approach to monitoring plum curculios

Ronald J. Prokopy, Bradley Chandler, Sara Dynok, and Jaime Pinero. University of Massachusetts, Department of Entomology, Fernhald Hall, Amherst, MA

A new approach to monitoring plum curculio was evaluated in 12 commercial orchards in 2002. Perimeter-row apple trees whose branches were baited with pheromone plus synthetic fruit odor were examined periodically for fresh egglaying scars. The bait drew immigrating adults to the “trap” trees, facilitating determination of the beginning, peak, and end of the fruit injury period.

Species 1: Coleoptera Curculionidae Conotrachelus nenuphar (plum curculio)
Keywords: baited "trap" trees, plum curculio, monitoring
