Efficacy of diatomaceous earth (DE) to control internal infestations of rice weevils

Franklin H. Arthur and James E. Throne. USDA-ARS-GMPRC, Biological Research Unit, 1515 College Avenue, Manhattan, KS

Wheat kernels infested with immature stages of rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, were mixed with wheat treated with 300 ppm diatomaceous earth (DE). Mortality of emerged adults was 56 -90% at 22°C and > 90% at 27 and 32°C. Exposure to DE suppressed F1 progeny by 60 - 90% relative to untreated controls.

Species 1: Coleoptera Curculionidae Sitophilus oryzae (rice weevil)
