Termite control: Making sense of madness

Michael F. Potter, Department of Entomology, University of Kentucky, Department of Entomology, S-225 Agricultural Science Center North, Lexington, KY

No structural pest causes more confusion and concern than termites. Of the thousands of householder inquiries received each year by the University of Kentucky’s Entomology Department, the greatest number involve termites and their control. Termite management in the United States is undergoing unprecedented change, and many new products and services are being offered to homeowners. Making sense of these new technologies has become a major challenge for pest control firms, regulatory officials, university extension personnel -- and most of all homeowners. This presentation examines the growing termite challenge, the arsenal of management options available, and things to keep in mind when offering advice to homeowners.
