How to manage insects in home grown fruits and vegetables?

Rick Foster, Department of Entomology, Purdue University, Department of Entomology, 1158 Smith Hall, W. Layfayette, IN

Management of insect pests of fruits and vegetables by homeowners is somewhat unique because the produce is likely to be consumed by the homeowner’s family. Therefore, food safety is the primary concern. Extension recommendations focus largely on preventive and cultural methods of control whenever feasible. When pesticides are necessary, simplified IPM principles are incorporated into the recommendations so that pesticides are used as efficiently as possible. Most extension recommendations include at lease some mention of organic fruit and vegetables production so that homeowners who choose to not use pesticides have some options available to them.
