The monarch larvae monitoring project: Turning ordinary people into entomological detectives

Karen Oberhauser, Department of Ecology, University of Minnesota, Department of Ecology, 1987 Upper Buford Circle, St. Paul, MN

The effect of Bt corn pollen on non-target organisms, especially Monarch larvae, has been debated by scientists across the country. The Monarch Lab network has involved a wide array of citizens to sample adult flight, larval survival and plant distributions across the Midwest in order to get an empirical answer to a serious environmental question. At the same time, students and adults are learning what it means to do scientific research.
