Newer chemistries and emerging technologies: What does it mean to a homeowner?

Venkat Pedibhotla and Bruce Augustin. The Scotts Company, Product Development, 14111 ScottsLawn Rd, Marysville, OH

For a number of years, homeowners throughout the US have relied on dursban and diazinon’s broad spectrum activity to solve their insect problems. However, with the non-availability of these high profile insecticides in the market (maybe more to follow their suit in the near future), there has been some difficulty and confusion among homeowners in choosing appropriate insect control products. In the past, identifying a pest or understanding the nature of the problem has never been of high importance for a homeowner. Newer and emerging chemistries tend to be less broad spectrum than their predecessors and consumers are challenged to have a greater understanding of the pest problem before seeking a solution. Not withstanding, are the vast array of product options available at the retail stores that can add to the confusion on deciding the choice for control.

In this session we would like to go through some of the major homeowner insect pests, identify the symptoms, and offer management techniques. This information is crucial from an environmental and product stewardship perspective and will greatly benefit homeowners in adopting appropriate management strategies for insect control.
