XML, eXtended Markup Language, provides a mechanism to add meaning to electronic communications. The development of standards for exchange of data promises to overcome the difficulties associated with differining operating platforms and software packages. The structure and function of XML is reviewed, and specific examples associated with biodiversity informatics are discussed.
