A comparison of carabid species in azaleas and azaelas planted with flowers

George C Hamilton, James H. Lashomb, Jianxin Zhang, and Lisa Reed. Rutgers University, Department of Entomology, 93 Lipman Drive, New Brunswick, NJ

Differences in the numbers and types of carabid species found in azaleas and azaleas planted with flowers (Shasta daisy and coriander) were investigated over a three-year period using pitfall traps. Pitfall traps were sampled on a weekly basis during the growing season and all carabids recovered were identified and used to determine weekly abundance. Weekly means were subjected to analysis of variance and mean separation tests to determine differences between habitats. The data were also used to determine species richness. A cluster analysis using the species richness values calculated for each habit was also conducted.
