Effects of metolachlor and alachlor on chlorpyrifos toxicity in Chironomus tentans (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Ying Jin-Clark and Kun Yan Zhu. Kansas State University, Department of Entomology, Waters Hall, Manhattan, KS

Toxicities of two chloroacetamide herbicides (metolachlor and alachlor) and an organophosphate insecticide (chlorpyrifos) were evaluated individually, and with each herbicide in binary combinations with chlorpyrifos using the fourth instars of the aquatic midge, Chironomus tentans. Our results indicated significant synergistic effects of these herbicides on the toxicity of chlorpyrifos. The possible biochemical mechanisms conferring the synergistic effects of the herbicides were discussed in this report.
