Molecular systematics of the leafhopper genus Errhomus (Rhynchota: Homoptera: Cicadellidae)

Diana Gail Johnson, Richard Zack, and Walter S. Sheppard. Washington State University, Department of Entomology, Pullman, WA

The leafhopper genus Errhomus was recently revised by Oman (1987) and Hamilton and Zack (1999). Both studies employed a variety of tools including morphological and biogeographic analyses. While both Oman and Hamilton and Zack generally agree in their results, there are some variations in species level designations; neither study used molecular techniques. The taxon lends itself well molecular study as the females are brachypterous and dispersal is extremely limited. Additionally, the biogeographic history of the genus is relatively well understood. We are employing mitochondrial DNA sequencing to better elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among members of the taxon.
