Coleoptera is one of the biggest orders in Insecta: more than 290,000 species have been described and about 30,000 species occurr in USA and Canada; in México 12,000 described species are present. We collected information from our Insect Museum (University of Tamaulipas - Cd. Victoria) and from literature, founding 593 species in 54 families had been recorded for Tamaulipas and Nuevo León. Coccinellidae (91 species), Chrysomelidae (90), Cerambycidae (75), Scarabaeidae (37), Curculionidae (37) and Melolonthidae (26) are the better represented families (356 species, 60% of the total). The genera with more species are: in Coccinellidae, Hyperaspis, Scymnus and Brachiacantha; in Chrysomelidae, Longitarsus, Diabrotica and Acalymma; in Cerambycidae, Oncideres and Rhopalophora; in Scarabaeidae, Macrodactylus and Onthophagus; in Melolonthidae, Phyllophaga and Anomala, and in Curculionidae, Sphenophorus and Anthonomus.
