The systematics of Diplous Motschulsky 1850 (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Patrobini)

Paul Marek and David Kavanaugh. California Academy of Sciences, Department of Entomology, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA

The hygrophilic, riparian ground beetle genus Diplous Motschulsky 1850 is comprised of ~24 species distributed throughout the Holarctic biogeographic region. Within the Nearctic subregion, there are 4 species, and within the Palearctic subregion there are ~20. Nearctic species are redescribed, a phylogenetic analysis is performed, biogeography is presented, and evolutionary implications are discussed. Palearctic species are introduced. Biogeography and a species-group phylogeny of Holarctic Diplous are presented and the relationship within Patrobini is discussed.

Keywords: phylogenetics, biogeography
