New feeding stimulants for subterranean termites

Elisa Bernklau, L.B. Bjostad, and David James. Colorado State University, Bioagr. Sci. & Pest Management, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO

We have tested candidate feeding stimulants in behavioral bioassays and have shown them to be active on Reticulitermes tibialis. and Reticulitermes flavipes. Termite workers consumed significantly more of the treated substrate than the controls. Choice tests were conducted over a 7 day period with various doses of feeding stimulants applied to crystalline cellulose chromatography plates. Treatments were also tested in the field in jar traps.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes tibialis (western subterranean termite)
Species 2: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes flavipes (eastern subterranean termite)
Keywords: feeding, behavior
