Novel techniques for corn rootworm field studies

We have developed and currently use three novel techniques to aid in field studies of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera. Fromm funnels provide a simple means of monitoring larval activity in fields. This method has been used to detect emergence of larvae as well as peak larval activity. Sampling data have been correlated with rootworm feeding damage. The mini hopper device allows for precision plot planting. Our root washing device quickly prepares roots for rating purposes.

Species 1: Coleoptera Chrysomelidae Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (western corn rootworm)
Keywords: sampling, root damage
