Seed treatment insecticide control of Lygus bugs and seed pod weevil in canola

David E. Bragg, Extension Entomology, Washington State University, Extension Entomology, 2702 Villard Street, Pomeroy, WA

Cabbage seedpod weevil is a Bruchidae beetle originally brought into the PNW Region of the USA, and possibly into western Canada in shipping ballast from Scotland. It has been the number one pest of Canola/industrial rapeseed west of the Rocky Mountains for many years. It is now well established on the Canadian Prairie as a primary pest of spring Canola. Lygus bugs can attack spring Canola in large numbers resulting in crop loss. While cyclical in the PNW USA Region, Lygus bugs are frequently Canola pests in Canada requiring extra pest managment. This study compares several "soft" seed treatment pesticides for control of these pests, with emphasis on Lygus, through pod formation in spring Canola at the USDA-ARS/WSU Central Ferry Research Farm SE of Washington State University, Pullman. Yield data plus damage ratings are compared.

Species 1: Hemiptera Miridae Lygus lineolaris (tarnished plant bug, Lygus bugs)
Species 2: Coleoptera Bruchidae Ceutorhynchus litura (cabbage seedpod weevil, canola seed weevil)
Keywords: Canola, pests
