Gregarine associates of white grubs: distribution, prevalence, and pathogenicity

David Cappaert and David Smitley. Michigan State University, Department of Entomology, Natural Science Building, E. Lansing, MI

Surveys of white grub pests of the eastern US, including Popillia japonica, Amphimallon majalis, and Phyllophaga spp. reveal widespread parasitism by cephaline gregarines. We evaluate the significance of gregarines as natural enemies, and the possibility that these pathogens contribute to population declines in white grub pest species.

Species 1: Coleoptera Scarabaeidae Popillia japonica (Japanese beetle)
Species 2: Eugregarinida
Keywords: biological control, natural enemies
