Attractiveness of spherical decoys to adult stable flies in coastal Florida

James Cilek, Public Health Entomology Research & Extension Center, Florida A&M University, Public Health Entomology Research & Extension Center, 4000 Frankford Avenue, Panama City, FL

This study evaluated variously colored inflated beach balls, treated with an adhesive, as a method to trap stable flies. The study area was located on a strip of beach located along the gulf coast of Florida. Balls were spray painted either solid white, solid black, or black with 3 equi-distant white circles. Unpainted beach balls were also evaluated and consisted of manufacturers red, blue, white, and yellow panels. All beach ball decoys trapped stable flies. The unpainted beach ball trapped the most flies. Overall, beach ball decoys were found to be more efficient in trapping flies(on a per cm2 basis) than Alsynite translucent cylinders. These cylinders are currently used to monitor field populations of these biting flies around animal facilities.
