Thinking 'outside' the box with non-repellent termiticides

Michael F. Potter and Anne E. Hillery. University of Kentucky, Department of Entomology, S-225 Agricultural Science Center North, Lexington, KY

Eleven structures, severely infested with the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, were treated only around the exterior with non-repellent liquid termiticides during 1999-2001. Activity indices, wood consumption rates, and foraging territories of colonies were delineated before and after exterior-only treatments with Termidor (fipronil) and Premise (imidacloprid). Long-term effects on foraging populations, inside and outside of structures will be discussed, as well as implications for the future of termite control.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes flavipes (eastern subterranean termite)
Keywords: termite, termiticide
