WK 19 - Ecology Education in Religious Organizations: Advancing Ecological Literacy and Environmental Justice
The workshop will provide background information for bridge-building between the ecological and faith-based communities and will feature dialogue between members who have worked with diverse religious groups and cultures. Additionally, ESA members who are also members of faith-based organizations will have the opportunity to: (1) learn about initiatives within their own traditions where they can contribute sound science as ecological professionals, and (2) share experiences and receive tips for extending knowledge and expertise to other traditions. The organizers bring the experience of working both as scientists and as educators with national-level interfaith and ecumenical organizations on environmental issues. Because much of the environmental justice (EJ) movement developed through the initiatives of faith-based organizations and because many EJ-impacted communities actively organize in conjunction with their faith community, it is important for ecologists to consider addressing environmental education within faith-based communities. Religious organizations are also where a broad range of adults gather to receive non-formal education, so ecology education within these communities can significantly contribute to advancing ecological literacy. Collaborative efforts between faith communities and scientists are also currently gaining national media attention, so ecologists and faith community partners alike may wish to examine how best to engage these new opportunities. This workshop is sponsored by the EJ and Education Sections of ESA and furthers the aims of: (1) encouraging interaction with other organizations engaged in EJ issues or dimensions, (2) stimulating education and outreach efforts that will provide better use and understanding of ecological concepts and research by non-scientists, and (3) increasing participation of underrepresented groups.
