2012 North Central Branch, Entomological Society Annual Meeting (June 3-6, 2012) in Lincoln, NE

The 67th Annual Meeting of the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America will be held June 3-6, 2012 at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln NE. The online submissions will be handled by Confex and hence the process will be very similar to submissions for the annual ESA meetings. However, this is the first year that Confex is handling submissions for all branch meetings so please be patient as together we will work out potential challenges with the system.

The online submission for papers and posters for NCB ESA 2012 will be open March 15, 2012.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTED PAPERS AND POSTERS IS MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2012!
THE DEADLINE FOR STUDENT COMPETITION PAPER AND POSTER SUBMISSIONS HAS PASSED.

Presenters for papers and posters must register prior to or at the meeting.

Please note the following specific instructions for student competitions, symposia and 10-minute oral and poster presentations. Please also note the general instructions for oral and poster presentations listed below the specific instructions.

STUDENT PAPER/POSTER COMPETITIONS

Students can make one presentation in either the oral or the poster presentation competition. First authors on the presentations in the competitions must be student members of the North Central Branch, and be registered for the meeting. First and Second prizes will be awarded at the Awards Luncheon for each of the categories listed below. Oral and poster presentations will be judged on scientific merit of the research, and on organization of the presentation, clarity in delivery. In the online submission, students will need to select the appropriate categories for their presentation: Oral or Poster; and Undergraduate, Masters, or PhD; and the appropriate ESA Section. Students in the competitions must submit an abstract (250 words) as these will be evaluated by the judges. An example of an abstract is included below at the end of the instructions. After entering and saving your abstract, you can continue with your submission. An email will be sent to you as confirmation that you have successfully submitted a paper/poster for the student competition and provide a link if need to update your submission later.

SUBMITTED 10-MINUTE PAPER/POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Please select the appropriate 10-minute or poster category and submit your title and author(s) information. An abstract is not required for 10-minute paper and poster presentations. An email confirmation will be sent to you after your submission is complete. We request that each meeting attendee submits no more than one oral and one poster presentation (i.e., one of each type of presentation) to allow time for as many presenters as possible.

SYMPOSIA PRESENTERS

If you are invited to make a presentation in a symposium by a symposium organizer, your presentation title and contact information will be submitted online by the symposium organizer on your behalf. Abstracts are optional for symposia presentations. An email will be sent to you as confirmation that your paper has been submitted for the symposium by the symposium organizer.

The effect of native prairie management strategies on bee distribution and abundance

Blue cross vane traps (BCVT) are effective at trapping non-Apis bees, even in the presence of floral competition. Non-crop habitats, including native prairie, serve as reservoirs for bees. Native prairies are being utilized to produce a hay crop for livestock feed. The effect of this use on bees is not clear. Before conducting a large-scale study, we wanted to determine if our plot size would be large enough to detect differences between cut and uncut treatments. Two prairie hay fields were selected. Each site is hayed once a year and had a tree row on one edge. Approximately a three-acre portion was left uncut for the duration of the test. One BCVT was placed in the center of each uncut portion. An additional transect of BCVTs was laid out perpendicular to the tree row border in the cut portion of the prairie hay field. Trap distances from the tree row were 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 meters. The 40m trap was used to compare uncut to cut hay trap catches. A total of 2701 bees belonging to 16 genera were collected over 12 trapping days. There was no significant difference (P<0.05) between the cut and uncut hay in the number of bees trapped (P=0.06). This difference may be attributed to the small sample size (n=12). Also there was no significant difference (P<0.05) between the transect distances in the number of bees trapped. A non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis demonstrated that bee communities were very similar among all trap placements.
