We discuss our ongoing effort to extract terms from existing publications to populate the Hymenoptera Anatomy Ontology (http://hymao.org/). Articles from the Journal of Hymenoptera Research were accessed through the Biodiversity Heritage Library, parsed, and vetted against the present ontology. The applicability and coverage of the ontology is illustrated by reflecting the current ontology, with existing data and results from the text extraction, back onto the core literature. This iterative process (extraction, reflection, extraction etc.) will be used to develop a controlled vocabulary that accounts for all known anatomical concepts for Hymenoptera.
