The field of invasion biology has only become a serious discipline of study in the last few decades. However, studies in the field have long predated the discipline with the attempts to control destructive invasive insects. I discuss the history and theories of invasion biology from an entomological perspective. I offer explanations as to why insects have played such a pivotal role in the global impact of biological invasions. I conclude with an overview of methods to control and prevent the spread of invasive insects in our increasingly global future.
