Where does Solenopsis invicta fit into native ant communities?

Joshua King, jking@bio.fsu.edu and Walter R. Tschinkel, tschinkel@bio.fsu.edu. Florida State University, Biology Department, Tallahassee, FL

The imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is perhaps one of the most studied social insect species. However, there is surprisingly little known of the distribution and impact of Solenopsis invicta within natural habitats. I will discuss the distribution and impact of Solenopsis invicta in natural habitats in Florida. I will also describe ongoing experimental work to separate the impacts of habitat disturbance and Solenopsis invicta in natural habitats.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Formicidae Solenopsis invicta
Keywords: introduced species
