Chironomid midges form an integral part of most aquatic (and some terrestrial) ecosystems. They have been used in physiological studies, environmental monitoring programs, and have been instrumental in the development of historical biogeography. Here we present the results of a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the group based on four genes, concentrating on relationships between major groups and monophyly of named taxa.
