In search of Chiloe and the phylogeny of Chalcidoidea

John M. Heraty, john.heraty@citrus.ucr.edu and David C. Hawks, david.hawks@ucr.edu. University of California, Department of Entomology, Riverside, CA

Chalcidoidea are a group of 19 families and approximately 400,000 species. Because of their morphological plasticity and extreme reduction in size, the phylogenetic relationships of the group are largely unknown. New efforts are underway to study the group with molecular (18S, 28S, wingless and forkhead genes) and morphological data. Rotoitidae is a rare family known only from two species in Chile and New Zealand. This presentation is the first report of its phylogenetic placement, along with a discussion of the proposed sister group relationship between Chalcidoidea and Mymarommatoidea.
