Biogeography of the cicadas of Big Bend National Park, Texas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae)

Polly Phillips, polly.phillips@fiu.edu, Florida International University, Department of Biological Sciences, 11200 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL and Allen Sanborn, asanborn@mail.barry.edu, Barry University, School of Natural & Health Sciences, 11300 NE Second Avenue, Miami Shores, FL.

The identification and distribution patterns of the cicadas of Big Bend National Park were studied. We collected twelve species within park boundaries. Tibicen chisosensis and Diceroprocta canescens are the only endemic species. Each species shows a close association to particular plant communities. The distribution of particular cicada species is restricted by the distribution of their host plants. By the end of the study we were able to predict which species would be found in particular habitats. We wish to acknowledge Big Bend National Park for permission to perform this study. We would also like to thank Ms. Betty Alex and Dr. Arnold Van Pelt for their personal assistance.
