The systematics and higher classification of the antillean, ocellated blue butterflies is complicated due to their uncanny similarity of appearance. Comstock and Huntington (1943) published the first overall review of the ancient, omnibus genus, Hemiargus Huebner. Nabokov (1945) subdivided this genus further into four genera (Hemiargus, Cyclargus, Echinargus, Pseudochrysops) based on a thorough analysis of superficial and genitalic characters. However, there were some inconsistencies in this analysis. The geographic ranges and seasonal polyphenism will be examined in light of the current classification and potential new combinations are proposed.
