Genetics and caste control in an ant hybrid zone

Glennis E Julian, ARL, University of Arizona, ARL, Division of Neurobiology, Tuscon, AZ

In most systems of social polymorphism, members of a given physical caste are equipotent. However, in some seed harvesting ants, caste determination appears to have a genetic basis. This study, working with ants in a hybrid zone, is one of the first to conclusively demonstrate a gentic role in caste determination.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Formicidae Pogonomyrmex rugosus (rough harvester ant)
Keywords: caste, polymorphism
