Software-facilitated grading of biological insect assays

J. Cesarek and J. Michel. Dow AgroSciences, 5501 Oberlin Drive, San Diego, CA

Many methods have been evaluated and implemented to optimize biological assays at Dow AgroSciences. One method currently under study is to use software to automatically grade electronic images of the biological assays. The goal is to enhance the automated system for accurate grading of biological assays. This method allows for increased efficiency, flexibility and effectiveness. The data is collected by a trained technician and may be stored as a visual image. The separation of the rapid data collection from the evaluation of results gives scientists flexibility in the timing and type of evaluation and conclusion on biological results. The testing of the inexpensive software system and algorithms for automated grading will be discussed.
