Biosafety tools for entomological bioassays

R. Tracy Ellis and J. Cesarek. Dow AgroSciences, 5501 Oberlin Drive, San Diego, CA

It is important to have worker protection for the testing of microbial samples against insects. In our laboratory we have developed tools and procedures for testing microbial samples against insects at a high standard of safety. Features of our containment include: 1) custom enclosed liquid handling system for dispensation of microbial samples onto insect diet, 2) engineered an insect diet drying apparatus with bio-filtered output, 3) built a specialized bioassay-reading glove box with imaging capabilities, 4) as well as installed a new free-standing, scale-filtering moth enclosure. In this poster we describe and show photographs of these safety tools.
