Recent developments in management of pests of Australian agriculture

Developments in pest control in Australia are based on a better understanding of their biology and ecology. Models have been developed to optimize timing of control for redlegged earth mite and for Helicoverpa. Transgenes are used in field cotton containing Bt for control of Helicoverpa with strict controls. Work has commenced to investigate non-target effects of GMOs. The development of resistance to insecticides is being investigated for Helicoverpa and for aphids. Impact of several pests is being minimized by the introduction of exotic biological control agents, and through the development of plant resistance.
