Efficacy of 'Surround WP' particle film alone and in combination with insecticides for orchard pest control

Sharon Jones and Gary Puterka. USDA-ARS, Appalachian Fruit Research Station, 45 Wiltshire Rd, Kearneysville, WV

A new class of insecticide called particle film technology has become commercially available under the name, Surround WP. This material creates a mineral barrier on plants that prevents oviposition and insect feeding. The interaction of Surround WP with conventioal insecticides registered for insect control on tree fruits was investigated. Results showed that insect control with combinations of Surround WP and certain insecticides was significanly higher than these materials used alone. In some cases, insecticide rates could be decreased by 50% in combination with Surround WP and still achieve levels of control equal to the full rate of that insecticide. None of the insecticides we investigated showed decreased activity when used in combination with Surround WP.
