Screening barley seedlings for resistance to bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.)

Do Mornhinweg, D.R. Porter, and C.A. Baker. USDA-ARS, 1301 N. Western, Stillwater, OK

Screening for BCO resistance at the seedling stage has been difficult due to the lack of visual symptoms on seedlings infested with BCO. Seedlings of barley lines previously reported to have BCO resistance or Barley Yellow Dwarf Mosaic Virus resistance, and susceptible barleys were tested with a new visual screening technique in the greenhouse with aviruliferous BCO. Grain yield and yield components of rescued seedlings were measured.

Species 1: Homoptera Aphididae Rhopalosiphm padi (bird cherry-oat aphid)
