Archolabus, an ancient attelabid?

Robert W. Hamilton, Biology, Loyola University Chicago, Biology, 6525 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, IL

Voss (1965) presented a phylogeny of leaf rolling weevils in the subfamily Attelabinae. He included the genus Archolabus at the base of his phylogenetic tree. The genus Archolabus contains a single species, Archolabus methneri Voss. Only four specimens of A. methneri are known to exist. Three cotypes were borrowed from the Museum fur Naturkunde,Zentralinstitut de Huboldt-Universitat zu Berlin (MNHUB). The cotypes were photographed and described and the single male dissected. External morphological characters and the male genitalia indicate that Archolabus is not an attelabid. The characteristics that distinguish this weevil from the attelabids and align it with certain curculionid subfamilies will be discussed.
