Acaroid mites (Acari: Astigmata) associated with termites (Isoptera)

Barry M. OConnor, Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan, Museum of Zoology, 1109 Geddes Ave, Ann Arbor, MI

Termites (Isoptera) are host to a diverse and largely undescribed fauna of commensal mites. The Astigmatid superfamily Acaroidea contains a number of poorly known termite associates which are reviewed here. In the family Acaridae, the genera Australhypopus, Machadoglyphus, Mahunkallinia, and Mahunkaglyphus as well as one unnamed genus are restricted to termite associations. In addition, some species in the genera Cosmoglyphus, Sancassania, and Schwiebea appear to be exclusively termitophilous. Finally, representatives of an unnamed genus in the family Suidasiidae also appear to be exclusively termitophilous.

Species 1: Acari Acaridae Australhypopus
